LIBRARY setubal . portugal
international competition . completed

The public competition raises some urban issues, not only by the need to create a new library, but also by the need of rethinking the square where it stands.

The most striking elements of this space are a wide Auditorium "José Afonso", an object designed for performing arts, built in the form of portico, with 21 meters high. The huge scale of this object and the square itself, which nevertheless present disproportionate dimensions, was the starting point for structuring the intervention concept for the new library and subsequent remodeling of Largo José Afonso.

Starting from a simple topographic modeling that maintains the area of the square intact, introduces a certain animation in it, and allows to hide the volume of the library. This gesture will allow the relationship of the Auditorium with the square, without entering as an element in the race for scale.
